Choosing a destination for your trekking holiday

I want to give you an idea of the range of trekking holidays available. You can trek in just about every country in the world and I have selected a few prime locations to get you started.

Whether you want to scale mountains or hike over gentler terrain, you’ll find you are spoilt for choice.

If you’ve already been on a few treks, you may have a favourite destination.

• Centre-based or point-to-point treks
• Hours per day you want to walk
• Trek grades – easy, moderate, strenuous or tough
• Trekking every day or a trek with days off or opt-out days
• Only trekking or a Multi-Activity Holiday

Group size & mix

The top adventure travel companies all operate small group treks on their trekking holidays, with an average of 6–16 people per trip.

Some put the maximum at 12 and will run the trek with as few as 4 people.

Expect a mix of ages, gender and status amongst your fellow trekkers, depending on individual trekking holidays.

I have been on treks where most people have been single, with just a few accompanied by a spouse or partner, and others where the balance has been the other way.

Age can also vary hugely as there is no age limit on enjoying life to the full and seeking a bit of adventure.

Many operators set a minimum age of 18 but an increasing number previously in this category are expanding into family adventure holidays.

This is a whole theme on its own and one I don’t have space on this website to do justice to.

However, if family trekking holidays are what you are looking for, the adventure travel operators found in the directory of adventure travel companies will be a good place to start.

In all respects of age, gender and status, I have learnt not to predict or prejudge.

Also, expect your adventure companions to come from a wide variety of different backgrounds and professions. It all adds to the richness of the group.

My philosophy:

Part of the joy of travelling is the people you meet along the way. Adventure travel brings great experiences in wonderful locations with like-minded people. What more could you want?

Travelling on your own?

I have to admit to having been very apprehensive on my first adventure holiday as I was a single traveller, especially as I’d elected to share a tent with a complete stranger. Sharing is rarely compulsory and you can usually pay a single supplement to have your own tent or room.
