Mountain Trekking

Discover the best worldwide destinations for trekking holidays. From challenging mountain treks to more gentle hikes amongst beautiful rolling hills. Find it all here.

What do trekking trips have to offer?

For me, trekking means:

  • Getting off the beaten track
  • Seeing awe-inspiring landscapes
  • Being immersed in the world’s great wildernesses
  • Experiencing remote locations
  • Just enjoying a really good hike with some adventure thrown in

If it means the same to you, then a trekking holiday may be exactly what you’re looking for.

The choice is endless and, of course, you don’t have to leave civilisation behind completely if you don’t want to.

If you want to start searching for your perfect trip straight away, click on the destinations below for some great ideas and companies to book with.

Trekking in Morocco – the High Atlas, isolated villages and forested valleys, Berber hospitality, spice scented souks, Sahara oases.

Trekking in Nepal – breathtaking mountain scenery on the rooftop of the world, tea houses in remote villages, an ancient way of life, a trekker’s paradise.

Trekking in South Africa – a country of contrast and stunning beauty with everything on offer from mountain trekking to walking safaris and Winelands hiking.

Trekking in Spain – follow ancient networks of trails, mule tracks and pilgrim routes through vineyards, olive groves and picturesque villages.

Trekking in Tanzania – the challenge of Kilimanjaro, the rich wildlife of the Great Rift Valley and Serengeti Plains, the proud Masai.

Trekking Kilimanjaro – experience the adventure of a lifetime. This stunning mountain will challenge you but reward your efforts many times over.

Trekking in Uganda – Climb to the top of the famed Rwenzori Mountains in Western Uganda. Though the mountain can also be hiked from Congo, the Central Circuit Trail is the best. Other mountains to climb in Uganda include Mount Elgon and the Virunga Ranges.

Share Your Favourite Trekking Destination

What’s your best loved location? Share it with us!

If you’ve already been on a few treks, you may have a favourite destination.

I’d love to hear what it is, as would other visitors to the site, so do share it with us.

Points to consider:

  • Your fitness level
  • Wilderness experience or culture & meet the locals
  • Accommodation – camping, lodges, B&Bs or hotels
  • Centre-based or point-to-point treks
  • Hours per day you want to walk
  • Trek grades – easy, moderate, strenuous or tough
  • Trekking every day or a trek with days off or opt-out days
  • Only trekking or a Multi-Activity Holiday

Group size & mix

The top adventure travel companies all operate small group treks on their trekking holidays, with an average of 6–16 people per trip.

Some put the maximum at 12 and will run the trek with as few as 4 people.

Expect a mix of ages, gender and status amongst your fellow trekkers, depending on individual trekking holidays.

I have been on treks where most people have been single, with just a few accompanied by a spouse or partner, and others where the balance has been the other way.

Age can also vary hugely as there is no age limit on enjoying life to the full and seeking a bit of adventure.

Many operators set a minimum age of 18 but an increasing number previously in this category are expanding into family adventure holidays.

This is a whole theme on its own and one I don’t have space on this website to do justice to.

However, if family trekking holidays are what you are looking for, the adventure travel operators found in the directory of adventure travel companies will be a good place to start.

In all respects of age, gender and status, I have learnt not to predict or prejudge.

Also, expect your adventure companions to come from a wide variety of different backgrounds and professions. It all adds to the richness of the group.

My philosophy:

Part of the joy of travelling is the people you meet along the way. Adventure travel brings great experiences in wonderful locations with like-minded people. What more could you want?

Travelling on your own?

I have to admit to having been very apprehensive on my first adventure holiday as I was a single traveller, especially as I’d elected to share a tent with a complete stranger. Sharing is rarely compulsory and you can usually pay a single supplement to have your own tent or room.

If you are a single traveller, click on the link to find out more and hear about my experiences.
